Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week in May

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 22-28 May 2009. Night at the Museum: Battle Smithsonian opened at the top of the charts, grabbing $79.8 million. Terminator Salvation, which last week was #4 based on being open for one day, this week was #2, taking in $61.1 million, for a total box office, thus far, of $74.5 million. Star Trek was down from #2 to #3, garnering another $35.1 million, for a three-week total of $196.7 million. Angels & Demons fell from #1 to #4, taking in $33.4 million, for a two-week total of $93.6 million. Comedy Dance Flick, which opened in the #5 position, is one of only two non-genre films in the top ten (it made $14.3 million). X-Men Origins: Wolverine was down from #3 to #6, bringing in $11.7 million, for a four-week total of $167.0 million. The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past slipped from #5 to #7, taking in $6.0 million, for a four-week total of $48.1 million. The drama Obsessed, at #8, is the other non-genre flick in the top ten; its $2.9 million take brings it to $66.8 million over five weeks. Monsters vs. Aliens is still strong, slipping only from #8 to #9, bringing in $2.5 million, for a nine-week total $194.1 million. 17 Again slipped from #7 to #10, grossing $1.6 million, for a six-week total of $60.9 million.
Race to Witch Mountain is making something of a come-back. This week, it climbed from #25 to #19, earning another $450 thousand, for an eleven-week total of $65.5 million. Knowing slipped from #20 to #23, taking in $300 thousand, for a ten-week total of $79.3 million.
