Steven H Silver alerts us to the fact that, in the British Commonwealth, the Queen’s birthday honours list has been announced (the Independent has this article on this year’s list).
Among this year’s honorees are several with connections to sf/f/h, including:
Actor Christopher Frank Carandini Lee receives a CBE for service to Drama and to Charity. Lee was born in 1922, and made his first film appearance in 1948. He had the title role in 1958’s Dracula, and reprised the role several times. More recently, he was Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Count Dooku in the new Star Wars films.
Scottish-born actor Alan Cumming receives an OBE for service to film, theatre, and the arts, as well as for his work as a gay rights campaigner. Born in 1965, he played Nightcrawler in X2, Boris in Goldeneye, and has a role in the forthcoming Riverworld.
Lee is getting a knighthood, not a CBE.
Cumming is getting an OBE, not a knighthood.
For Cumming to get a knighthood would require at least one kind of sci-fi concept to come into play. Parallel universes maybe, or some kind of generic purple swirly thing.
