Top Box Office Grossers: Third Week in May

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 15-21 May 2009. Angels & Demons opened in the top spot, taking in $60.1 million. Last week’s #1, Star Trek, was just squeezed out of that position, earning another $57.0 million, for a two-week total of $161.6 million. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, too, was pushed down, from #2 to #3, bringing in $19.0 million, for a three-week total of $155.3 million. New opener Terminator Salvation found itself in the #4 spot while being open less than a full week; it took down $13.4 million in its first day or so. The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past was pushed from #3 to #5, taking in $8.9 million, for a three-week total of $42.1 million. 17 Again only slipped from #6 to #7, grossing $4.3 million, for a five-week total of $59.3 million. Monsters vs. Aliens, still showing surprising strength, held steady at #8, bringing in $4.1 million, for an eight-week total of $191.6 million.
While genre films appear to dominate the top ten, things get sparse after that. Knowing slipped from #18 to #20, taking in $450 thousand, for a nine-week total of $79.0 million. Race to Witch Mountain, which fell out of the top 25 two weeks ago, this week returned to the #25 spot. It grabbed another $200 thousand, for a ten-week total of $65.0 million.
The Haunting in Connecticut, last week’s #21, fell out of the top 25 in its eighth week in release. So did Battle for Terra, which was #23 last week, and has been out for three weeks.
