The New York Times reports the death of actress Joan A. Stanton on 21 May 2009 of intestinal blockage. Born Louise Abrass in St. Paul, Minnesota, on 16 April 1915, she was known as Joan Alexander when she came to fame as the voice of Lois Lane on radio’s The Adventures of Superman (which ran from 1940 to 1951). She had previously been a model and stage actress, but acting opposite Bud Collyer in the iconic superhero radio play was the pinnacle of her career. She later reprised the role in several television venues.
She was twice married and divorced, first to actor John Sylvester White (best known for playing Principal Woodman on Welcome Back, Kotter), then to Robert Crowley. Her third husband, Arthur Stanton (whom she married in 1955) was a car distributor who died in 1987. She is survived by a daughter, a son, and a grandson.
