New York City-based film reviewer Dan Persons has launched Mighty Movie Podcast, a weekly (or more) podcast featuring some innovative and interesting filmmakers talking about their latest releases.
Persons tells SFScope: “I took a look at what’s being offered in movie/TV podcasts, and noticed that they were either very specifically targeted (e.g., Harry Potter or James Bond), or they were ‘review’ podcasts, which boiled down to a couple of people sitting around and nattering for an hour. (The only people I’ve found to make this latter format work are the guys putting out ‘Scene Unseen’, which is actually pretty entertaining.) Very little real journalism is going on, and here I am in NYC with access to some of the most interesting filmmakers around. Thus, Mighty Movie Podcast: 10-15 minutes in which I’ll be interviewing a director who will give us a glimpse behind the scenes of his/her latest production.
“This won’t be strictly genre, although an initial episode will be dedicated to an interesting little low-budget, quasi-cyberpunk film, Sleep Dealer. And the focus is going to be primarily on independent projects (plus side: There are enough interesting indies coming out—including the intense prison escape film, The Escapist; Carlos Cuaron’s caustic soccer drama Rudo y Cursi; and Atom Egoyan’s exploration of world communications Adoration—that I’m anticipating that I’ll be posting more than once a week for the initial few weeks), but I’m hoping to eventually bring in mainstream projects as well.”
