Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 13-19 March 2009. New opener Race to Witch Mountain topped the charts, taking in $31.7 million. This pushed last week’s #1, Watchmen, down to #2, where it garnered $23.4 million, for a two-week total of $91.3 million. The remake horror flick The Last House on the Left opened at #3, grossing $18.1 million. Those new films pushed Coraline from #7 to #9 this week, even though it’s weekly earnings of $4.2 million equaled the amount it took in last week. Coraline‘s six-week box office total is $70.7 million.
Friday the 13th dropped from #14 to #19, taking in $800 thousand, for a five-week total of $64.6 million. Push was down from #17 to #20, pulling in another $750 thousand, for a six-week total of $30.8 million. Street Fighter tumbled from #13 to #23, earning $600 thousand, for a three-week total of $8.3 million. The Uninvited slipped from #22 to #25, bringing in $500 thousand, for a seven-week total of $28.3 million.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which was last week’s #21, fell out of the top 25 in its twelfth week in release. And Twilight, which was #25 last week, fell out of the top 25 for the second time. It’s been in the theatres for seventeen weeks now.
