81st Annual Oscar Winners Announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed out their 81st annual Academy Awards (the “Oscars”) last night. As we announced in this article, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was the top nominee, with 13 nominations. It wasn’t however, the top winner: that title went to Slumdog Millionaire, which took home eight awards.
SF/F/H honorees last night were:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button:
     Visual Effects
     Makeup
     Art Direction
The Dark Knight
Actor in a Supporting Role (Heath Ledger)
     Sound Editing
WALL-E
     Animated Feature Film
One superlative from the evening: the last time an acting Oscar went to an sf/f/h film was probably Jodie Foster’s Best Actress win for The Silence of the Lambs in 1991, or possible Martin Landau’s Best Supporting Actor win for Ed Wood in 1994.
