Top Box Office Grossers: Fourth Week in December

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 19-25 December 2008. The Keanu Reeves remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still dropped from #1 to #3 behind two new films: Yes Man and Seven Pounds. The Day the Earth Stood Still grossed $17.3 million, for a two-week total of $55.7 million. The Tale of Despereaux opened in the #6 spot, taking in $12.6 million. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which opened on the 25th, still managed to wind up at #7, earning $11.8 million. Disney’s Bedtime Stories also opened on the 25th, and grabbed the #8 slot with $10.5 million. We’ve also mistakenly not been claiming Bolt as one of ours, but it is indeed a fantasy film. This week, Bolt earned $8.4 million, garnering it the #9 slot, for a five-week total of $99.1 million. And behind six brand-new openers, Twilight fell from #3 to #10, taking in $7.8 million, for a five-week total of $161.1 million.
Another film open less than one week, The Spirit (which also opened on the 25th) managed to make the #12 spot by bringing in $3.8 million. Quantum of Solace dropped from #6 to #13, earning another $3.7 million, for a six-week total of $162.9 million.
After a scant three (yes, three!) weeks in release, Punisher: War Zone dropped from #13 out of the top 25. The Polar Express also dropped out of the top 25, from last week’s #22, but this film has been in release for 215 weeks.
