Born in 1914 in New Jersey, Edward Daniel Cartier graduated from Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute and then started his professional illustration career in 1939. He was closely associated with John W. Campbell’s Astounding and Unknown, and provided 800 illustrations for The Shadow Magazine.

Edited 8 January 2009 to add this link to a good, in-depth (though somewhat delayed) obituary in the The New York Times.
