Top Box Office Grossers: First Week of October

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 3-9 October 2008. Blindness is the top grossing genre film for the week, but it opened in a distant 12th place (behind five other new films and several in their second, third, or fourth week in release). Blindness grossed $2.6 million. Igor dropped from #6 to #16, taking in $2.2 million, for a three-week total of $17.5 million. Ghost Town was down from #11 to #19, grossing $1.9 million, for a three-week total of $12.0 million. The Dark Knight is down from #13 to #21—it’s biggest single week drop since opening—taking in $1.2 million, for a twelve-week total box office take of $526.2 million.
Journey to the Center of the Earth, last week’s #21, dropped out of the top 25 in its thirteenth week in release. Fly Me to the Moon also left the top 25, from last week’s #22, in its eighth week in the theatres. Death Race, too, is gone, from last week’s #23, after seven weeks in release. And WALL-E departs from the bottom of the top, after fifteen weeks on big screens.
