Top Box Office Grossers: Fifth Week of September

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 26 September-2 October 2008. The top grossing genre film for the week, for the second week in a row, is Igor, which dropped from #5 to #6 in its second week in release. This week, it took in $6.5 million, for a total take of $15.3 million. It was the only genre film in the top ten (the other spots were taken by five dramas, three comedies, and a crime flick).
Ghost Town dropped from #8 to #11 (there are four new releases in the top ten), grossing $3.8 million, for a two-week total of $10.1 million. The Dark Knight is down from #9 to #13, taking in another $2.2 million, for an eleven-week total box office take of $525 million. Journey to the Center of the Earth was down from #18 to #21, bringing in $650 thousand, for a twelve-week total of $99.9 million. Fly Me to the Moon dropped from #19 to #22, earning another $650 thousand, for a seven-week total of $11.8 million. Death Race fell from #13 to #23, bringing in $550 thousand, for a six-week total of $35.8 million. WALL-E, after falling out of the top 25 last week, returned to the #25 spot, with a box office take of $325 thousand, for a fourteen-week total of $220.9 million.
Babylon A.D., last week’s #17, fell out of the top 25 in its fifth week in release. Mirrors also fell off the list, from last week’s #22 spot (it’s been visible for seven weeks). After only seven weeks, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, too, dropped out of the top 25 (last week it was #24). Get Smart, also, has dropped from last week’s #25 (it’s been in the theatres for fifteen weeks).
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, last week’s #23, appears to have closed completely after eight weeks in release.
