Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” series of romantic vampire novels, has announced that she’s stopped work on Midnight Sun because a copy of one of her early drafts (of only a portion of the novel) was posted on the internet. She writes on her web site that “I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published.” And explains the violation of her rights involved in the posting.
“So where does this leave Midnight Sun?” she rhetorically asks. “My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.”
However, to satisfy the curiosity of fans who haven’t found the illegal posting but want to read it, she has posted it herself (see a link from this page).
