Top Box Office Grossers: Last Week of June

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 27 June-3 July 2008. New release WALL-E topped the charts bringing in more than $86.3 million in its first full week in release. The other new release, Wanted, took second place, with $65.5 million in its first full week. Hancock, which wasn’t open for a full week, still managed to hit #3 on the list, grossing more than $41.3 million. Behind those three powerhouses, Get Smart dropped from #1 to #4, taking in $29.7 million for a two-week total of nearly $87.0 million. Kung Fu Panda fell from #2 to #6, bringing in $18.3 million for a four-week total of $185.9 million. The Incredible Hulk dropped from #3 to #6, grossing $12.7 million for a three-week total of $118.9 million. The Love Guru, the first non-genre movie in the top ten, dropped from #4 to #7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull lost only two spots, even with three new films at the top. Indy fell from #6 to #8, bringing in $7.7 million for a six-week total of $302.7 million. Sex and the City, at #9, was the only other non-genre film in the top 10. The Happening fared worse this week, falling from #5 to #10. It still managed to gross $5.4 million for a three-week total of $60.6 million.
Iron Man was down from #9 to #12, taking in $3.3 million for a nine-week total of $310.3 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian fell from #11 to #14, bringing in $1.4 million for a seven-week total of $138.1 million. The Strangers fell from #10 to #16, grossing $825 thousand for a five-week total of $51.7 million. Horton Hears a Who is still on the charts falling only from #20 to #22, bringing in more than $175 thousand for a sixteen-week total of $153.9 million. Nim’s Island fell from #19 to #24, earning $175 thousand for a thirteen-week total of $47.3 million.
Jumper and Speed Racer both dropped out of the top 25. Jumper fell from #22 in its twentieth week in release, after returning to the heights (see last week’s article). Speed fell from the #23 spot in its eighth week on the charts.
