Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 6-12 June 2008. New release Kung Fu Panda topped the charts, taking in $83.7 million in its first week. Panda and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (which opened in the #2 spot) pushed everything else down. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped from #2 to #4, bringing in $31.6 million for a three-week total of $261.8 million. The Strangers dropped from #3 to #5, grossing $12.9 million for a two-week total of $41.3 million. Iron Man was down from #4 to #6, taking in $10.9 million for a six-week total of $292.3 million. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian fell from #5 to #7, bringing in $8.4 million for a four-week total of $128.7 million.
Speed Racer was the first film to drop more than the two spots forced by the new releases. It was down from #7 to #13, grossing about $675 thousand for a five-week total of $42.3 million. Resuming the two-place drops, Horton Hears a Who was down from #13 to #15, bringing in $400 thousand for a thirteen-week total of $153.2 million. Nim’s Island was down only one slot, from #16 to #17, taking in $300 thousand for a ten-week total of $46.5 million.
The Forbidden Kingdom dropped hard, from #16 all the way out of the top 25 in its eighth week in release.
After making a return to the top 25 last week, Superhero Movie again fell out, in its eleventh week in release.
