Anticipation announces 2009 Hugo Award base design competition

Getting things going rather earlier than last year, Anticipation, the 2009 World Science Fiction Convention, has opened the competition to design the base for the 2009 Hugo Awards. The main element of the Hugo Award trophy remains the silver-colored, 13-inch tall rocket, but as has become traditional, the design of the base is being opened to competition. Base designs should “have a theme appropriate to Canada and Quebec,” and there must be space on the base for a plaque (or plaques) indicating the convention, winner, and category of award. Traditionally, the winning designer presents the base at the beginning of the Hugo Award ceremony.
Designs are due by 31 October 2008, and the winner will be announced in January 2009. Full details for entering the competition are available on this page.
Anticipation, the 67th World Science Fiction Convention, will be held at the Palais des congres de Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 6-10 August 2009. Guests of Honor include Neil Gaiman, Elisabeth Vonarburg, Ralph Bakshi, Taral Wayne, David Hartwell, and Tom Doherty, with Julie Czerneda as Master of Ceremonies. Membership rates (valid through 31 July 2008) are: $190 (US/Canada) attending; $55 supporting, $75 child; $450 family (two adults and two children aged 6-12).
