Film and tv producer Sandy Howard died 16 May 2008 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Born in the Bronx, New York, on 1 August 1927, he sold short stories as a teenager to the weekly magazine Liberty.
Still in his teens, he was a publicist for Broadway, and moved on to directing at the age of 19, working on television’s Howdy Doody Show, according to the Motion Picture and Television Fund. He went on to produce Captain Kangaroo, and in the 1960s, moved to Hollywood to pursue a career in film.
His genre productions include: Blue Monkey (1987), Dark Tower (1987), What Waits Below (1984), Meteor (1979), Circle of Iron (1978), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977), Embryo (1976), The Devil’s Rain (1975), The Neptune Factor (1973), and Caccia ai violenti (One Step to Hell, 1968).
