Actress Eva (Elisabet) Dahlbeck died 8 February 2008 in Sweden; she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Saltsjo-Dunvas, Sweden, on 8 March 1920, she attended the Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm. She may be best remembered for her roles in Ingmar Bergman films, including Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), which pushed Bergman to international notice. Dahlbeck was also an active stage actress, and won the Eugene O’Neill Award in 1961 for her theatrical work.
Her first credited movie appearance was in the historical drama Ride Tonight! (1942), which was based on a play in which she had appeared.
Dahlbeck’s genre appearances include: The Creatures (1966; original title: Les Créatures) and I, the Body (1965; Morianerna).
She semi-retired from acting in 1964 to take up a career writing, and her last film appearance was in Tintomara in 1970.
Dahlbeck was married to Sven Lampell, an officer in the Swedish air force and International Red Cross official, from 1944 until his death last year. She is survived by their two sons, David and Tomas.
