BBC Audiobooks is releasing Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency this week. The three-CD (3 hours 40 minutes) audio version is listed at £15.99 (or £10.80 for a download from bbcaudiozone.com).
This audiobook is the BBC Radio 4 dramatization of Douglas Adams’s first Dirk Gently book. The performance stars Harry Enfield and Billy Boyd, and is directed by Dirk Maggs. In addition to the original broadcast, this release “will also contain nearly an hour’s worth of exclusive, extra material not included in the broadcast.”
Dirk Gently is a private detective who “has an unshakeable belief in the interconnectedness of all things, but his Holistic Detective Agency’s only success seems to be tracking down missing cats for old ladies. Then Dirk stumbles upon an old friend behaving bizarrely, and he is drawn into a four-billion year old mystery that must be solved if the human race is to avoid immediate extinction.” The Dirk Gently novels carry Adams’s trademark humor, but are much darker than his Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
