Allies in Space marks Sputnik anniversary with discussion

New York City’s astronomy club, NYSkies and the New York City chapter of the National Space Society are cohosting the annual Allies in Space conference to promote the exploration and observation of outer space. This year’s theme is the 50th anniversary of the first artificial satellites that opened the space age. It marks the anniversary of the 4 October 1957 launch of the USSR’s Sputnik, followed by the 31 January 1958 launch of the USA’s Explorer 1.
The event will feature Alexander Bolonkin (Soviet aerospace engineer who worked on the Sputniks), Tom Hamilton (US astronomer who worked on the Apollo project), Tom Hill (US Air Force astronautics engineer and author), and Larry Price (Lockheed-Martin aerospace engineer) discussing the history and progress of the Space Age, its current status, and plans for future space exploration, travel, and settlement. It will start at 12:30PM on Saturday 3 November 2007 at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center on 34th Street and Fifth Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.
