Sarah Rees Brennan sold her debut urban fantasy trilogy to Karen Wojtyla at Margaret K. McElderry Books (Simon & Schuster) via agent Kristin Nelson of the Nelson Literary Agency. The first book will be titled The Demon’s Lexicon. The series, which sold at auction for a high six-figure price, is about “two brothers hunted throughout England by a powerful magician’s circle after their mother steals a charm and when the eldest is marked by a demon, the younger uses swords and dark arts in an effort to save him but unwittingly uncovers the darkest of secrets.”
Brennan is twenty-three, an avid fantasy fan, and “utterly over the moon about my deal.” She tells SFScope she “was born and raised in Ireland by the sea, where her teachers valiantly tried to make her fluent in Irish (she wants you to know it’s not called Gaelic) but she chose to read books under her desk in class instead. After living briefly in New York and doing a Creative Writing MA and library work in Surrey, England, she is in the process of returning to Ireland to write. Her Irish is still woeful, but she feels the books under the desk were worth it.”
Brennan’s web site, www.sarahreesbrennan.com, is a bare-bones, still-under-construction site, but she has an active LiveJournal blog at mistful.livejournal.com.
