Upcoming MoCCA Events

New York City’s Musem of Comic and Cartoon Art has regular Monday evening talks, panel discussions, and other events. The events are free and open to the public. All events start at 6:30PM (doors open at 6:15PM).
On 27 August, the discussion will be “The Changing Image of Black Women in Comics and Graphic Novels.” The presenter for this week is Professor William Foster III. The description is “A historical summary of how the image of black women have been portrayed in comic strips, comic books and graphic novels since the turn of the last century up to the present day (1890s-2007). It traces their change from a series of unflattering and unattractive stereotypes to the wide variety of strong and powerful three-dimensional human beings created today.” Foster is also the guest curator of their current “Looking for a Face Like Mine” exhibit, which celebrates the roles of African American as both characters and creators in comic and cartoon art.
On 10 September (MoCCA is closed on 3 September for Labor Day), the event will be “Metro Anime: A Brief History of Anime Violence”: which will be a “look at violence in anime from the early years to currrent trends and how it may have influenced generations of watchers. From Astro-Boy to Code Geass, does watching anime cause violent behavior? Or is it a means to curb them? Is Sailor Moon a gateway drug to vigilante violence? And how did ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All,’ turn into a mass of twitching bodies?”
The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is at 594 Broadway, Suite 401 (between Houston and Prince Streets), New York, New York 10012. For more information, call 212-254-3511 or see www.moccany.org.
