Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week of August

Variety reports the top 25 movies for the week of 10-16 August in terms of box office take. New fantasy release Stardust opened in a potentially disappointing fourth place, but to be fair, Rush Hour 3 opened this week, and The Bourne Ultimatum and The Simpsons Movie both seemed destined to draw much larger audiences. So Neil Gaiman’s Stardust‘s openning week take of $13.8 million in the US isn’t that bad. Last week’s #3, Underdog, moved down to #6, grossing $9.8 million for a two-week total of $28.1 million. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix dropped from #6 to #7, grossing $8.5 million in its fifth week in release, for a total of $275.1 million. Transformers is down from #8 to #10, grossing $4.9 million in its sixth week in release, pushing its total to $304.5 million.
New release Skinwalkers, which opene in a scant 745 theaters, made a respectable $855 thousand in its first week, placing it #17 on the list. Evan Almighty, last week’s #23, is back up to #19 after 8 weeks in release, taking in $487 thousand to bring its total to $98.1 million.
Dropping out of the top 25 this week were Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Iast week’s #24), and Sunshine (last week’s #21). Shrek the Third has apparently closed after 12 weeks in the theaters.
