Variety reports the top 25 movies for the week of 3-9 August in terms of box office take. New fantasy release Underdog opened behind this week’s new top #1, The Bourne Ultimatum and last week’s #1 The Simpsons Movie. Underdog brought in $18.3 million in its first week in release. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is down from #3 to #6, grossing $15.1 million in its fourth week in release, for a total of $266.6 million. Transformers dropped from #6 to #8, taking in $9.3 million to put it just below the $300 million mark, with a total of $299.6 million.
Shrek the Third is still holding on, this week down from #19 to #20, grossing three quarters of a million dollars, to give it a 12-week total of $321 million. Sunshine was up to #13 last week, and now it’s down to #21, taking in just a little less than Shrek to bring its three-week total within a few thousand of $3 million. Evan Almighty, which dropped 7 places to #15 last week, this week fell farther, to #23 (as it again lost 700 screens, and is down to 376), grossing $590 thousand for a seven-week total of $97.6 million. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is still hanging on, falling from #20 to #24, grossing just over half a million in its eighth week, for a total of $130.6 million.
1408 dropped from #17, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End from #22, both of them falling out of the top 25.
