Zero-G, the space entertainment and tourism company that offers customers the opportunity to experience weightlessness in an airplane, has announced their newest special flight. The Platinum Experience will feature Apollo Moon-walker Buzz Aldrin as coach and guide for a flight on 3 November 2007 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Only a very few people have the opportunity to experience zero gravity. Even fewer will be able to do so with one of the few men whose own adventures in weightlessness sparked our imaginations; who unleashed our own inner dreamer, inner astronaut, inner flyer.”
The three or four hour experience includes about 90 minutes in the air. During that hour and a half, the modified Boeing 727 flies 15 parabolic arcs, each providing about 30 seconds of weightlessness. The standard fee for the experience is $3,500. Perhaps their most famous customer to date was Professor Stephen Hawking, who flew on 26 April 2007.
For the special Platinum Experience with Buzz Aldrin, however, there are a few changes. The fee is $8,900, but there will only be 16 places, affording far more maneuvering room (the regular flights take 35 people). In addition, customers on this flight will get a special Nomex flight suit, a special dinner with Aldrin, and an expanded “regravitation party” after the flight (which is normally a champagne toast and some food, giving participants a chance to relive their new experience).
