Actor James T(homas) “Jimmy” Callahan died 3 August 2007 after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer in February. Born 4 October 1930 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he may be best-known for playing Walter Powell, the grandfather, on Charles in Charge.
After serving in the Army in the early 1950s, he worked for the Post Office and went to school, where he discovered acting. He graduated from the University of Washington late in the decade, and then had more than 120 film and television roles between 1959 and this year.
His last film, Born, is currently in post-production. His other genre film appearances include: Return of the Living Dead III (1993), Plymouth (1991), and Experiment in Terror (1962).
He appeared in genre television productions including Medium (2005), Amazing Stories (1986), two episodes of Knight Rider (1982 and 1985), Automan (1983), the two-part Disneyland episode “The Mystery of Dracula’s Castle” (1973), two episodes of The Invaders (1967), The Time Tunnel (1966), My Favorite Martian (1964), and The Twilight Zone (1963).
Callahan married his first wife, Peggy (who survives him) in 1994.
