Top Box Office Grossers: Second Week of July

Variety reports the top 25 movies for the week of 6-12 July in terms of box office take. New release Transformers jumped into the top spot, taking on $102 million in its first week in the theaters (because of the holiday, it opened early, so it has a total box office take of $187 million). Evan Almighty dropped from #3 to #5, taking in $12.9 million this week for a total of $82.9 million after 3 weeks in release. 1408 dropped from #4 to #6, but still managed to take in $10.5 million (total of $57.2 million). Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer is down from #5 to #8 (earning $5.9 million for a total of $125.6 million).
After 7 weeks in the theaters, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End dropped out of the top ten (from #8 to #11), grossing almost $4.3 million this week, for a total of $303 million. Shrek the Third is still around, but down from #11 to #13. It grossed $2.2 million for a total of $317.4 million in 8 weeks. Disturbia is climbing for the second week in a row, this time moving from #21 to #20, and grossing $451 thousand (about 12% more than last week) for a total to date of $79.5 million. Rounding out the list of genre pictures, Spider-Man 3 dropped from #16 to #21 (in its tenth week in the theaters), and took in $449 thousand, bringing its total take to $334.5 million.
Oh, and a teaser for next week’s article: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix took in more than $77 million in its first weekend at the box office.
