German stage, film, and television actor Ulrich Mühe died of stomach cancer 22 July 2007. Born in Grimma, East Germany (which is now Saxony, Germany) on 20 June 1953, he won several German and European film and television awards, and starred in this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film, The Lives of Others.
His genre appearances include roles in Hamlet_X (2003), Sieben Monde (1998), Funny Games (1997), and Benny’s Video (1992).
He protested against the Communist regime before reunification, and last year, lost a legal battle over his right to refer to his ex-wife, actress Jenny Gröllmann, as a former Stasi informant.
He is survived by his wife, actress Susanne Lothar, their two children, and three other children from his previous marriage, including the actress Anna Maria Mühe.
