On his Facebook page, agent Joe Monti (currently at the Barry Goldblatt Literary Agency), reports that Simon & Schuster is launching a science fiction and fantasy imprint, and points to this Publishers Weekly article. He also reports that he will be executive editor of the new imprint.
PW reports that the as-yet-unnamed imprint will “be overseen by Jon Anderson, executive v-p and publisher of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, but will… publish books ‘for readers of all ages.'” Anderson told PW the audience for the new imprint is seen as “YA and above.”
S&S has published sf and fantasy in the past, but not with a dedicated imprint. Anderson is quoted as saying “A lot of content comes our way that we find compelling, but which won’t work in teen sections [of bookstores]. We don’t want to use that as an excuse to not publish books for a growing market.”
Justin Chandra, who is currently vice president and publisher of S&S Books for Young Readers, Atheneum and Margaret K. McElderry, will be the publisher of the new imprint. And Navah Wolfe will be joining them as editor (she has been at S&S Books for Young Readers for six years).
The imprint is planned to publish about one hardcover per month, starting in Spring 2015, although they may be able to release a few titles by Fall 2014.
