In May, Penguin Classics announced that filmmaker and horror aficionado Guillermo del Toro would be curating a new six-volume series of classic horror novels. The books are being released now, and Penguin has just revealed their covers.
“To learn what we fear is to learn who we are,” del Toro wrote in his series introduction, an essay titled “Haunted Castles, Dark Mirrors: On the Penguin Horror Series.”
The six-book series includes:
American Supernatural Tales edited by S.T. Joshi – a 512-page anthology with stories ranging (chronologically) from Washington Irving to Caitlin Kiernan.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Haunted Castles by Ray Russell
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Raven: Tales and Poems by Edgar Allan Poe
The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories by H.P. Lovecraft
