Top Box Office Grossers: first week in December 2012

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 30 November-6 December 2012. For the third week in a row The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 held onto the #1 spot on the charts, chewing up $22.4 million, for a three-week total of $259.5 million. Skyfall held steady at #2, spying up $21.6 million, for a four-week total of $250.6 million. Fantastical exploration of life and religion Life of Pi held steady at #4, earning $16.3 million, for a two-week total of $52.6 million. Fairy-tale superhero team-up Rise of the Guardians held steady at #5, bringing in $15.9 million, for a two-week total of $51.4 million. Brad Pitt’s new thriller Killing Them Softly opened at #6. Wreck-It Ralph slipped from #6 to #7, tearing down $8.3 million, for a five-week total of $159.5 million. Red Dawn slipped from #7 to #8, shooting up $8.2 million, for a two-week total of $33.0 million.

Horror flick The Collection opened at #11, killing $4.0 million. Argo fell from #10 to #13, rescuing $2.7 million, for an eight-week total of $101.7 million. Indian thriller Talaash opened in the US at #14. Cloud Atlas slipped from #16 to #19, connecting with $350 thousand, for a six-week total of $26.3 million. Looper slipped from #19 to #22, returning $200 thousand, for a ten-week total of $65.9 million.

Falling out of the top 25 this week were:
Hotel Transylvania (last week’s #20) in its tenth week in release (box office total: $143.7 million)
Brave (last week’s #23) in its twenty-fourth week in release (box office total: $237.1 million)
The Odd Life of Timothy Green (last week’s #25) in its sixteenth week in release (box office total: $51.6 million)
