Actress Frances Reid Dies

By Kit Hawkins

Actress Frances Reid died 3 February 2010. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on 9 December 1914, she was best known for playing family matriarch Alice Horton on the soap opera Days of Our Lives from the show's debut in 1965 until today (although her last appearance was in 2007). She was nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards for the role in 1979 and 1987, and won the Daytime Emmys' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Reid grew up in California, trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, and began her acting career on the stage. She appeared in more than a dozen Broadway productions in the 1930s and 1940s, before moving into television in the 1950s.

Her genre appearances include Project U.F.O. (1978), The Andromeda Strain (1971), Seconds (1966), Matinee Theatre (1955), and Lights Out (1949).

She married actor Philip Bourneuf in 1940 (he died in 1979).

My parents watch DOOL every day, without fail. They said today that Frances Reid has appeared on the show within the last year. According to my father, she's not on often, but she does make appearances every so often. He thinks she was on the annual Christmas episode in December.

Are you sure she was in The Andromeda Strain? Actress Kate Reid, who played Leavitt, died in 1993.

Unless Frances Reid played a secondary character, you're mistaken

That's correct. Both Reids were in the film: Kate as Dr. Ruth Leavitt, and Frances as Clara Dutton.
