Top Box Office Grossers: First Week in May

Variety reports the top movies, in terms of box office take, for the week of 1-7 May 2009. X-Men Origins: Wolverine opened in the top spot, taking in $102.6 million in its first week in the theatres. Romantic comedy (with fantasy overtones) The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past had a much slower opening week, with a box office take of $19.8 million. 17 Again fell to #4, grossing $7.6 million, for a three-week total of $49.8 million. Monsters vs. Aliens held steady at #6, proving to be the movie with the best legs in quite a while. This week, the animated adventure brought in $6.9 million, for a six-week total of $183.5 million.

New animated adventure film with a message Battle for Terra opened at #12, earning $1.3 million. Knowing slipped from #12 to #15, taking in $750 thousand, for a seven-week total of $78.1 million. Crank High Voltage fell from #10 to #16, sucking in another $700 thousand, for a three-week total of $13.5 million. The Haunting in Connecticut was down from #14 to #18, grossing $500 thousand, for a six-week total of $55.1 million.

Race to Witch Mountain (last week's #18) and Dragonball Evolution (last week's #22) both fell out of the top 25 this week. Race has been in the theatres for eight weeks, while Dragonball has only been out for four.
