The Dark Knight is only the second half-billion dollar film

By Kit Hawkins

The Dark Knight this weekend became only the second movie in Hollywood history to earn more than $500 million at the domestic box office by taking in an estimated $11 million over the Labor Day weekend. This brings the total take for the Batman Begins sequel to about $502.4 million in just over six weeks. The other half-billion earner, Titanic (1997), took twice as long, reaching that number in three months.

Directed by Christopher Nolan (who co-wrote the film with his brother Jonathan)—and starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Maggie Gyllenhaal, with support from Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman—the movie shows the darkening of the Batman character, as he realizes what he has to be in order to best serve Gotham. A dark, action movie, we reviewed it in this article.
