In a press conference without any of the usual pomp or circumstance, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the winners of their 65th annual Golden Globes this evening. The big story wasn't the winners themselves, but the lack of anyone there to receive the awards or make acceptance speeches. With the Writers Guild of America strike still in full swing, and actors respecting the picket lines, the HFPA scaled back the event to a brief announcement of the winners.
As we noted when the nominees were announced, the sf/f/h genres were not very well represented. They did even worse in the final awards. In fact, only Sweeney Todd took home any of the awards. It won the award for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy; and its star, Johnny Depp, won for Best Actor, Comedy or Musical.
Due to the cancellation of the awards show, the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award was postponed until 2009. It was to have gone to Steven Spielberg for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field."
Actually, genre productions were hit so hard that not even William Shatner won the best supporting actor award for his work on Boston Legal.
