Eye of the Beholder—Fringe's "Johari Window"
On February 8, 2010, Sarah Stegall said:

YMMV, of course, but as I've said, I really prefer the "MOTS" episodes over the mythology eps. For the most part, I find the attempt to fit an over-arching and overcomplicated story into the format of a weekly series to be unfortunate; the results are contrived and frustrating. It's one thing for an episode to have a "call back" to something that occurred earlier--it's a little in-joke, a treat for attentive fans. It's something else entirely when the viewer's understanding of an individual episode relies wholly or greatly on her memory of a detailed storyline that started two years ago. That's asking too much of an audience.

And commercially, it's unwise. Which gets shown in syndication more often, "Hill Street Blues", which practically invented the extended story arc, or "The Twilight Zone", which stuck to individual, independent stories?

Like I said, OD, your mileage may vary. I think we can agree, however, that this show has a great deal of potential, either way.

Actress Frances Reid Dies

>Are you sure she was in The Andromeda Strain? Actress Kate Reid, who played Leavitt, died in 1993.

Unless Frances Reid played a secondary character, you're mistaken.<

That's correct. Both Reids were in the film: Kate as Dr. Ruth Leavitt, and Frances as Clara Dutton.

2009 Academy Award Nominees Announced
On February 2, 2010, Sarah Stegall said:

No fair! "Up" is nominated for best Animated Feature Film AND Best Picture? Giving it TWO chances to win? I didn't think that was within the rules.

I'm not sure how "Sherlock Holmes" is a science fiction, fantasy or horror film, since the "supernatural" events in that movie were shown to be hoaxes. It played like a nineteenth century thriller to me.

I walked out of the theatre after "Avatar" thinking that this picture MIGHT be the one to break the curse, the first science fiction film in history to win Best Picture. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm cynical enough to think the Academy voters will dismiss it as a gimmick, and hand the top honors to some dreary tragedy that played to empty theatres.
